As we know, Ian McEwan is devastating on the themes of regret and damage. He'd slay 'Gray.'

With 'Phantom' I'm remembering Murakami's affinity for music and specifically his 'Norwegian Wood', with the protagonist's worrying attachment to a lover who often seems more dead than alive.

Amanda Gorman is unblinking about history yet joyful, and her poetic rhythms invite dance. She'd have a ball with 'Hiawatha.'

@michaelmagras Haha, I think #IanMcEwan is one of the greatest stylists, and scene-builders, I have ever read. I might trade a body part to have written a couple of the scenes in ATONEMENT or ENDURING LOVE. His focus is dazzling.

But total package, I'm always left unsatisfied, I think because the characters he writes who (like me) diverge from his worldview—to me, chilly, scientistic, bordering on the reductionist—never feel quite real to me.

But what sentences! What paragraphs!
