Jumped when I had the chance to see Tyson perform at Berkeley's Freight & Salvage in May 2010. Tyson's vocal range had been compromised by illness and overexertion in years prior but he and his band put on a memorable show and he was sitting at the merch table afterward to sign autographs and chat with fans. I remember sensing his utter exhaustion when our eyes met – he would've been 77 then – but he seemed a patient, perfect gentlemen. Really glad I did not stay home that night. #RIP #IanTyson

When I taught/team-taught mapping I'd incorporate music & cinema. Johnny Cash's Four Strong Winds had replaced Neil Young's since geography always looms large for Cash. Especially drawn to this song's mix of the day to day–crossing a continent ISO work–and the classically eternal: Four Winds, Seven Seas … Ptolemy's Cosmographia. I wanted to know more about its author, (re)discovered Ian Tyson, and went deep into Ian & Sylva with the four CD Complete Vanguard Studio Recordings. #RIP #IanTyson
