Listened to the "#Mainframe Myths Debunked! - with Jennifer Velasquez and Kirk Chadrick" episode of #IBMZ DevOps Talks today while on the train, and they talked about languages, git, developer environments and more! Lots of good stuff packed in a small podcast!
I think I enjoyed the "#COBOL is easy" bits the most. I keep saying this and people don't believe me 😅 Kids these days have it... harder! It's way different, but concept-wise it's quite straight forward.
Great #TerminalTalk episode with Joe Bostian & Chad McIntyre about #Python 🐍 for #IBM z/OS!
It's been a fascinating journey to watch what it takes to get a properly running Python on a totally different operating system than most of us are familiar with.

Finally got to listen to the latest z/Action! podcast about unboxing the IBM z16 rack mount.
I've spent a lot of time in data centers, so this was a fun one for me. And it literally came with a blue bow 😁💙🎀

The MainframerZ group recently had a meetup all about Open Source Software on #IBMZ!
I was able to sync up with event speaker Joe Winchester prior to this event, and so I manged to get a mention of our Open Mainframe Project Software Discovery Tool in his tour of the ecosystem! 🥳

In our rush to be excited about the fancy new "modernization" goodies on #Linux on #IBMZ, we sometimes forget the foundation that brought us here, and continue to shine, like z/OS, JCL, and CICS.
This article doesn't forget them, and gives a great primer to the uninitiated: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/07/the-ibm-mainframe-how-it-runs-and-why-it-survives #mainframe
@arstechnica The article is nice but there are several inaccuracies that make the system even better than explained. Some examples:
- Talking about parallel sysplex: "Up to 32 CPUs can be clustered in parallel to achieve near-linear speedup under load” → You can cluster up to 32 LPARs not CPUs. Each LPAR may have a different number of processors ranging up to 200.
Parallel syxplex works in a star schema to communicate systems. Data resides at one shared point for all LPARs in the sysplex. There’s no single point of failure despite that.
- It can also run Linux and other operative systems, not just z/OS.
- Telum is a helping unit, not the processor itself. The processor itself is not even remotely close to POWER. Processors in a mainframe are CISC not RISC as in POWER.
- The software stack is so oversimplified that it is a bit misleading. Java, Python, C, C++, Assembler, Node.js, PL/I, Bash, SH, Fortran, Pascal… are some of the languages that can be run on a mainframe alone or inside appplication servers.
For all the rest, it’s a good article to start understanding why it stands...
