This unusual large insect buzzed by me and landed on this leaf. It turns out to be a Short-tailed Ichneumonid Wasp (family Ichneumonidae), whose abdomens are not as elongated as the usual Ichneumonid Wasps. Spotted at Pasir Ris Park on 21 Jan 2023.

A selection of #insects from the #SLAM #Malaise trap I run in #Canberra for the week 3-10 February 2023.
#Fly: Austrotephritis pumila #Diptera #Tephritidae
Darwin #wasp: Anacis sp. female #Hymenoptera #Ichneumonidae
Click #beetle: Conoderus sp. (probably C. exsul)
Small wasp: #Encyrtidae sp.

Some interesting flying ants, various attractive hoppers and two female #Leptobatopsis mesominiata (#Ichneumonidae) in the mix. I'll image many of these and set the sample aside for DNA.
If you work on any group and would like me to image specific individuals, let me know.

@chrisU just vanishing seems to be their thing - I found a few dead ones but the rest seems to either have left or is hiding again (or died in a secret place I may find one day).
I have no idea what made them wake up all at the same time, I guess it must have been related to the weather or maybe some change of the temperature indoor caused by it.
I didn’t use #ladybugs yet but #Ichneumonidae for pest control - they are so tiny / invisible that I didn’t feel attached to them.
Female (3 images) and male (white face, no ovipositor) #DarwinWasps of the genus #Australoglypta (#Hymenoptera, #Ichneumonidae, #Banchinae) from the #Canberra #Malaise trap in the second half of September 2022, when this was the commonest ichneumon.

I found time to image one more #DarwinWasp (#Ichneumonidae) from the #Malaise trap back in May. This is another winter species here in Canberra. The genus is #Megaceria (#Ctenopelmatinae) and Gauld found Megaceria pagana to be a common mid-winter species in Canberra so it could well be that.

Today's #DarwinWasp (#Ichneumonidae) from the #Malaise trap in Aranda, ACT in June 2022. This one is a male #Netelia (#Tryphoninae).

Another #DarwinWasp from my #Canberra #Malaise trap: a female #Myrmeleonostenus, likely undescribed, from 10-17 Dec 2021
Preparing #Hymenoptera specimens feels like a decadent luxury. I always break legs and rub off scales when I try to pin #microlepidoptera. Gluing insects to card is SO much easier. I made a real mess with too much glue on this one, but cleaning it and redoing it was simple.
Confession: I now glue #wasps that normal hymenopterists would pin.

Keyed out another #DarwinWasp (#Ichneumonidae, first image) as the fourth obvious species from the genus #Anacis so far found in my garden in #Canberra, #Australia. None of these species is named. Images here of all four females (males are different and will need DNA to match up).
Gauld 1984, The Incheumonidae of Australia (the last major work on the fauna here) lists the one named species of Anacis and adds "I have seen 55 undescribed species."

Managed to key out a female #DarwinWasp (#Ichneumonidae) caught in the #Malaise trap in #Canberra ACT in mid-October. The genus is Gotra (#Cryptinae) but getting further will be difficult.

I have 319 #Ichneumonidae specimens from the second year of #Malaise trapping to sort and identify at least as far as genus. Probably the larger part of the Australian fauna of this family is undescribed at the species level.
Four #DarwinWasps (#Ichneumonidae) from the #Malaise trap, Aranda, ACT, #Australia in the final six weeks. I'll try to key all these as far as possible in the coming weeks.
#Ichneumonidae, 14-21 October 2022, https://inaturalist.org/observations/145539577
#Orthocentrinae (? #Orthocentrus), 30 September to 7 October 2022, https://inaturalist.org/observations/145539573

Four more insects from the #Malaise trap, Canberra, ACT, 26 August to 2 September 2022
1. #Ichneumoninae sp. - I'll key out at least the genus soon.
2. #Orthocentrus sp. (#Ichneumonidae) - probably the commonest #ichneumon #wasp (or set of externally similar species) in my garden
3. #Pentacladus eucalypti (a #BarkLouse #Elipsocidae)
4. #Lamiinae sp. (a #LonghornBeetle #Cerambycidae) - I always find these harder to identify than I would expect

Four #wasps from the #Malaise trap (Canberra, ACT) in the week of 19-26 August 2022.
No close identifications yet, but these are 1) #Braconidae, 2) #Chalcididae: #Haltichellinae, 3) #Ichneumonidae: #Phygadeuontinae (should get that one to genus soon, but species likely to be unnamed), and 4) #Chalcidoidea.
All on #iNaturalist if anyone wants to progress their identification:

I ran a #Malaise trap run in my garden for two years (2020-10-23 to 2022-10-28). The first year's samples went to the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics in Guelph, ON for DNA barcoding. In the second year, I've been focused mostly on #Ichneumonidae and other parasitic wasps. #entomology
Three insects from 12-19 Aug 2022: #Acanthobetyla cerbera (#Diapriidae, 2 images), #Elateridae sp. and probably #Anacis sp. (#Ichneumonidae).

RT @sagaOptics: Ichneumon wasp, Ophion sp. Exciting section of the dorsal view. The ocelli are clearly visible here, which are really huge in relation to the head and the compound eyes.
