I want:
1 a central monitoring aggregator
2 a web (or other) front end
3 dozens of satellite agents running in VPNs and whatever
4 for those agents to collect data locally, then push to central
Icinga does 1 and 2 great and then becomes frustrating with 3 and 4. Why?

#munin is great, used it before!
#zabbix was never really for me.. YMMV.
Never used #nagios myself before. I've used #Icinga in the past though - which is quite nice!
That is a mixed environment indeed. Getting all those operating systems under one roof can sometimes be an adventure - had this situation with #windows and #linux.
