@luis_in_brief the first disruptive technology that attracted copyright litigation in the Science article about generative AI & copyright law was indeed player pianos. I like that example too but it was at the time not a dual use technology like VCRs & MP3 players which I was trying to highlight. Glad you liked my #ICML Gen Law talk

.@pamelasamuelson with a great talk here at #ICML but her list of disruptive technologies that challenged (and change) copyright does not include my favorite example—the player piano.

I say this mostly in jest, but I do find that talking about player pianos and the Copyright Act of 1909 helps ground and humble discussions with technologists—copyright law, and creators, have faced challenges from tech for a very long time.

I'm wondering if #ICML is just a waste of our time. Even if they gave us an opening talk so everyone could hear us, they probably wouldn't listen. You can't change human values at a conference. This is a poster being posted in the men's toilets.
