Everyone I know is coming back from our massive once-every-four-years #phonetics conference and testing positive for covid.

I stayed masked inside the whole time, took all my lunch and coffee breaks outside on the terrace, and skipped the conference dinner. I'm fine.

n=1, but it's almost as if my continuing caution is causally related to the fact that I've not had covid even once.

Gotta love those conference poster sessions. Nothing like yelling about your research for an hour and a half. My voice hurts.

(To be fair, it was a very good poster session, and I had some excellent conversations on behalf of my student who couldn't make the visa permissions work to present her own work. But still. My voice hurts.)

Day 2 of #ICPhS

Holy fucking christ, WEAR YOUR GODDAMN CONFERENCE NAMETAG.

Yes, you may be royalty. You know who doesn't know your royal face? Every freaking grad student going to their first conference who will be your peer in a few years. Wear your nametage. Let the future generations connect with you, before you become obsolete upon retirement.

Opening ceremony included a wonderful performance by a dulcimer-player. Very disorienting to recognize so many of the Slavic roots and morphemes from my training in Russian, Polish, and OCS, and yet not quite be able to extract the meaning from the Czech songs.

Except the 2nd song. I understood a lot of that.

The fourth one was more obscure---possibly because it was--as we have been informed--mostly 2nd person imperative.3rd person past tense (2nd song) is easier, it seems.

Any other sociophoneticians reviewing ICPhS papers? I just reviewed the five I was given and none of them were sociophonetic! Is it because few of us submitted or because many of us are reviewers? #ICPhS

Casually (i.e., anxiously) waiting to finish final course grading so I can do a journal article review so I can get to my #ICPhS paper that I'm woefully behind on, all in the few hours a day I will allow myself to do work when I should instead be visiting with family during the holiday season (and just generally resting before our new quarter starts immediately after the new year).
