🧵. The UK generally has far more authentic disabled representation than the US onscreen, as well.

NEW REPORT: There is a #DisabilityDeficit in UK television. 5 years after we started monitoring data on inclusion, we’ve seen changes. But we’re a long way from where we need to be. Our new report takes a deep data-backed dive into the problem. #IDDP https://creativediversitynetwork.com/diamond/diamond-reports/a-deep-dive-into-the-representation-of-disabled-people-in-uk-television/

Community is power.
Community is magic.
Community is resistance.” Alice Wong, Disability Visibility First Person Stories from the 21st Century.

I am disabled.
I am disabled not because my body and brain are different, but because our society renders my state of being disabling.
"But you look healthy!"
But you can't see my disability.
You'll never see my chronic pain. You won't see my bruises. You won't notice when I've recently dislocated something for having the gall to move. My ADHD and anxiety won't show up on my sleeve.
When I'm most impacted, you won't see me at all.
But I am disabled.

In honor of International Day of People with Disabilities, we want to amplify a request disabled people have been making, which too often falls unheard:
Wear a mask 😷

#CovidIsNotOver #COVIDisAirborne #WearAMask #maskUp #iddp #IDPWD
Calling it the International Day of Disabled People is the right thing to do, despite the official title being International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Don't let anyone criticise you for doing so (it happened to me last year!) because the significance of the language of disability we use is more important than an official name. We're disabled. I'm disabled. I don't 'have' disabilities. That's not how the social model works. #IDDP #IDPwD
