I love seeing the speakers of different come up with to describe the same concepts. I've been learning on duolingo off and on for over four years and only just realized the phrase that translates to "always"--"i gcónaí"--literally means "in residence". It makes so much sense when you think about it, but I'm so used to my own idiom as a native English speaker that it would never occur to me to put it like that.

Je me demande si l'Anglaise🇬🇧 qui dit "je prend les reines" a cru toute sa vie que ceux qui arrivaient à la direction d'un nouveau poste pouvaient enfin se taper toutes les monarques du monde. Est-ce que ça veut dire que les Finlandais🇫🇮 croient au contraire pouvoir s'enfiler tous les rennes? @cerdic

Give me your favorite idioms for hot weather, I'm going to need them.

My personal favorite, and the one I use most often is:

"It's hotter than Satan's own jockstrap".

Please feel free to tell me about idioms about hot weather in other languages too!

Oh, metaphors and figures of speech make translation hard!

I read an idiom about a governor in an Asian country being bright red. I thought it meant he was embarrassed. It meant he was a communist!

Help me out here... If you have a single person hanging out with a couple, are they a third wheel or a fifth wheel?

I've always said fifth wheel because a fifth wheel is superfluous. A third wheel is a tricycle, which is a perfectly legitimate mode of transportation. But two critique partners, without talking to each other, just corrected me. Have I been wrong all this time?

Blogs are so unfashionable now that it's a pleasant surprise when new comments appear on old posts, like this one on the troublesome phrase "beg the question"

Brazilian and European Portuguese are different . They share similarities, like their spelling rules (see the most recent spelling agreement) and grammar, but their and many other aspects are very different. Also, Portuguese is spoken in many places, not only in Portugal and Brazil, though most speakers do live here in Brazil. Some other locations where people speak Portuguese are Cabo Verde, Macao, Mozambique, and Angola.

The phrase "slow as molasses" is short for "slow as molasses in January", because molasses are already thick so in the Northern hemisphere winter as temperatures drop molasses become increasingly difficult to pour.

Sometimes the Texas idioms come flying out whether I planned it or not. Today's slip was "polishing turds". 💩

It's a phrase that means a situation is really terrible, but we're not going to fix it, we're just going to make it more palatable even if the work is a wasted effort.
