Commentary and interviews from the 1983 Iditarod trail, from Anchorage to Nome.
1983 was the 11th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, but the first one to start in downtown Anchorage.
Originally produced by Will Peterson for KSKO AM / McGrath, Alaska. Digitized from original cassette audiotape, August 2023.

2001 Chilly Dogs (aka Kevin of the North) movie trailer. Skeet Ulrich (aka Kevin) must race the Iditarod to prove he is manly enough for inheritance from grandfather. This is an actual movie that happened. Primarily filmed around Vancouver. It was called Kevin of the North during its brief theater run and renamed Chilly Dogs for its home video release. #alaskahistory #alaska #iditarod

Two staff members of the University of Alaska Fairbanks recently rode 1,000 miles across Alaska on bikes with tires fat as a loaf of bread.

My last #Iditarod post for this year. Jason Mackey, brother of four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey who passed away last year after many years of battling cancer, won the Red Lantern for being the last person to cross the finish line in Nome. Jason carried the ashes of his mom and brother and scattered them along the trail.

#Iditarod all but two of the teams are now safely into Nome; still on the trail are Jed Stephenson and his 10 dogs with 8 miles to go; and Jason Mackey and his 5 with 16 miles to go. Two dudes, 15 dogs, and 15ish miles ...
so this is a great time to remind ourselves of the importance of the Red Lantern Award

#Iditarod update:
Joanna Jagow's team should be next to finish, they have 22 miles to go. Then Bailey Vitello's team, not long after.
Then there's a gap to Gerhardt Thiart and Bridget Watkins' teams, on the way to Safety with about 55 miles left.
Finally, Jed Stephenson and Jason Mackey have made it to White Mountain - 77 miles to go.
I'm really hoping Jason gets the Red Lantern but when he does I will be a weepy mess.

Some pretty awesome photos were taken on the Iditarod trail as the last few mushers are heading into Nome.

Check out this stunning aerial photo of musher Kelly Maixner & team as they descend Cape Nome, just a few miles east of the #Iditarod finish line in Nome, Alaska. Maxiner finished in 6th place.

#Iditarod only six teams left on the trail: Jagow, Vitello, Thiart, Watkins, Stephenson and Mackey.
Jagow has 77 miles to go, and Mackey has 98.
It won't be long until the Red Lantern arrives in Nome.

#Iditarod Deke Naaktgeboren's team has arrived at Nome and the Berringtons are coming in next! They have 34 miles to go

#Iditarod Nic Petit and team arrived in Nome at about 2am local time to earn 17th place in reality (behind KattiJo Deeter*) but 16th place (ahead of her) if you believe the trackibois.
Never believe the trackibois.
They also show Riley Diche still on the trail but I saw his doggos in Nome on the live cam so...
*Apologies to KattiJo for calling her KatieJo in prev. posts.
