After updating #BIOS and #iDRAC and other firmware to the latest on my #Dell server, #XCPng 8.2.1 won’t start any virtual machines. The VMs previously ran just fine. The console now claims, “failed: hvm is required for this operation.” The server CPUs support VT-x and it is enabled in the BIOS.

This is an extremely frustrating #homelab experience.

Wow, so finally have my server's #iDRAC (integrated Dell remote access controller) on my monitoring system... Which is a VM on that machine.

The effects were STRANGE. Arping would transmit but never receive on that server, but my desktop could see both. I thought it was something to do with Linux bridging.

Turns out even though I had the physical Ethernet cable run to the iDRAC Ethernet port, it defaults to using ethernet0 in this weird piggyback mode that makes it so the same machine can't talk to its own iDRAC.

Going into iDRAC and telling it to use its own dedicated Ethernet fixed the issue, and now I can query it via SNMP!

anyone here have experience #hacking #iDRAC ? I want to mess around with IPMI sensors

A #Dell server at work won't boot (due to some special treatment we gave it). I was asked to connect through #iDRAC (Dell's remote management interface). I can power-cycle it, but the Java remote console doesn't work for whatever reason.

So I try to use #ipmitool instead:
