Beyond that, if you go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IW_(game_engine) the Treyarch developers apparently forked their *own* engine off the engine forked from #idTech3 around 2009... So any modern Treyarch Call of Duty is on a fork of a fork - is that still idTech? Probably overthinking it but it's interesting.
Before settling here, I was briefly considering applying to be on idtech.space - a more #gaming focused Mastodon instance with a focus on... Well, #idTech games and their derivate engines ( #sourceengine , Call of Duty, so on)... But it got me thinking about something.
When do two engines divulge far enough from each other, such that calling them derived from each other is basically wrong? The CoD engine, for example, has seen 9 major updates since forking from #idTech3 - is it still idTech?
