Movie I saw last night: "Cairo Conspiracy" (2022). Sweden's submission to the Best International Film Oscar race made the shortlist but did not receive a nomination. Adam, a fisherman's son, receives a scholarship to Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Expecting to receive a high-quality education as a religious scholar, the naive Adam finds himself complicit in a plot by State Security to make sure the university elects a grand imam whose politics are in alignment with the state's. Will Adam be able to keep his wits about him and avoid being dragged down by the corruption all around him? At the #IFCCenter in NYC.

Movie I saw yesterday: "Broker" (2022) - from South Korea. A young mother abandons her baby, two men try to sell the baby, and somehow they all (plus a stowaway orphan) form an ad hoc family as they take a road trip trying to find a good home for the baby. Things become complicated quickly, but we come to understand and care for these characters and the sometimes grim reasons for their choices. Song Kang-Ho is particularly good. Playing at the #IFCCenter in NYC.
