“Move to IKN” seems like a lazy solution but obviously it’s not the only thing that he said. He also said the city needs dramatically increased public transport and EV adoption.

Jakarta is not a city designed to be a capital city with more than 15 million daytime population (11 million at night), 17 million motorcycles and over 3.7 million cars. Jakarta wasn’t even properly designed beyond the old Batavia. Urban sprawl has been out of control for 40 years and public transport is grossly inadequate.

The car centric approach to the city was initiated during the early Soeharto era and continued unabated ever since. It wasn’t until 2004 that serious overhaul was being implemented with the introduction of the Transjakarta system and, 15 years later, the MRT. Far too late to mitigate the congestion and pollution problems caused by lack of infrastructure planning.
