Here’s another imaginary composite creature commission! This one was for a study group- a trio of friends who are studying the hammerhead shark, hedgehog and galah (or rose-breasted) cockatoo, respectively.

The HammerheadHedgeGalah is handprinted on Japanese washi paper, 9" x 11" (22.9 cm x 27.9 cm) in silver, brown and pink.

I have an ongoing series of imaginary animals I invent but sometimes I print other people’s visions of animals too.

These cats are inspired by a friend's dream:
"Years ago I had a dream about Swedish snailcats, that live along the rocky coast of northern Sweden. Their fronts are marmalade cats, and their backs are snailshells.

Happy birthday to Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) who, amongst other things speculated about a teapot orbiting in space.

This lino block print of Russell's Teapot is part of my series of Imaginary Friends of Science of charismatic thought experiments. In this case, the alledged china teapot, in orbit between Earth and Mars is an analogy….

Some believe that the Crystal Cave Crab is . Who am I to say?⠀

100s of metres deep below the surface there are cave systems, where hot ground water saturated with sulfide ions meets cool oxygenated surface water. As a result giant gypsum selenite crystals can grow, sometimes many m in length. This occurs in the Mexican Cave of the Crystals, but also elsewhere, & likely in places we have yet to find.

The fabled iceberg squid, a gargantuan arctic squid, who camouflages himself as an iceberg, is the subject of this whimsical mini linocut print. Some believe the iceberg squid is imaginary, but who am I to say?

It is widely believed that the blue whale is the largest extant animal on earth, but the iceberg squid can dwarf even that mighty mammal. Improbably, it is its sheer size which makes it so hard to find -

The Æeolian , is a largely unknown & likely creature. Unlike other jellies, it floats in the upper ocean of air, blanketing our planet.

The Aeolian jellyfish (Æolia noctiluca) looks like its sea-borne cousin Pelagia noctiluca (Pelagia = sea, nocti = night & luca=light). Aeolian come from the Greek Æolus, keeper of the winds, & refers to its air-borne nature. There are some important differences between them …

Some believe that the chrysanthemum snake is imaginary. Who am I to say?

While other snakes are known to use scale roughness to aid in camouflage, give a bristly appearance, to produce "eyelash" fringes or even tentacles on their snouts, the cryptic chrysanthemum snake (also known as the daisy snake) is the only known snake with a collection of petal-like scale spikes on its head, which mimics the shape of a flower.

This is a of a couple of Snowflake Beetles a widely unknown, quite possibly, completely creature. These miniscule are camouflaged to match their environment, fresh fallen snow. Each of their hexagonal shields (the elytra) are disguised as snowflakes. Through an extraordinary instance of biomimicry, each pattern is as unique;

Some believe that the hammerhead hedgehorse is imaginary. Who am I to say?

Though it appears to be an extraordinarily tall hedgehog, with hoof-like feet and uncanny peripheral vision, the hammerhead hedgehorse is not closely related to the hedgehog. Its nearest neighbour, genetically speaking, is the pygmy hippo. They may appear to have horse-like hooves, but…

Some believe that the duck billed deer is . Who am I to say?

About the size & white-spotted golden brown colouring of the S. American pudú deer or the Javan mouse deer, this rarely seen tiny deer-like quadruped of the Southwest Pacific is not in fact a deer at all. The unexpected duck-like bill is the first hint that this is perhaps not a regular ruminant mammal.

My mandriltee for ! Some believe that the mandriltee is imaginary. Who am I to say?

Though it appears to be rotund, short-armed mermaid with strange facial markings, the mandriltee is neither fish nor primate & certainly not the composite creature of myth. Their name, however, is inspired by their unlikely ressemblance to the mandrill, & they are of the order Sirenia (which comes from the word …

Thought I'd start sharing the Critterdids..
Here's the Spink. Spinks are small fluffy rodents that live in fields. They are very social and playful. Their antennae seem to be a very important mode of communication, possibly indicating mood and/or important information.
