Mijn dochter en ik waren uitgenodigd om #kerst te vieren bij een #australische familie (2017). Bij aankomst bleek dit al een bijzondere ervaring met #taal en #integratie als #immigrant.

De man des huizes was van #duitse origine en zijn #duitse moeder woonde bij hen. Zijn broer was met gezin uit #zwitserland overgekomen om samen #kerst te vieren.

Bij onze aankomst gebeurde er al iets #komisch toen wij ons samen voorstelden. 'Where are you from' hoorde tot het ritueel..(2)

I'm reminded of a story; maybe true, probably apocryphal. An immigrant to Canada - probably Ukrainian, escaping Stalin's starvation genocide (Holodomor), which would put this in the early 1930s - came to Manitoba. Canada was giving settlers a 160 acre plot of land free (well, there was a minimal registration fee) if they would live and farm on it.

He asked his new neighbours "What grows well in this climate?".
