Oh, hi, itch to use an #immutable #Fedora desktop. It's been a minute.
I'm not sure if I'm willing to migrate my activity flow to distrobox and flatpak only to be dissatisfied later and want to go back to a mutable desktop.
I don't particularly *need* the benefits of an immutable system.
This is a take! More often people complain about how hard it is to achieve true immutability in Python.
list(tuple_instance) to the rescue, I guess :)
A bit late but i realized 30 seconds ago that #FedoraSilverblue is immutable. I was looking for an #immutable system and am so glad #fedora got me covered. Can't wait to install it.

Even if you don't run an #immutable system, you can still take advantage of things like #Toolbx and #Distrobox to set up alternate development environments.
My preference is to use Distrobox with a custom home directory so (theoretically anyway) config files don't mix in with those in the main system.

> When I first started using Linux in 2006, I remember dreaming of a Linux Console. It wasn't so far fetched, the PlayStation 3 had just been released with OtherOS support which allowed users to install Linux (or BSD). Still, it seemed that a Linux-first console seemed like it would only ever be a dream.

Considering checking out an #immutable #Linux distro that uses #distrobox, like #openSUSE #MicroOS or #VanillaOS, because I like the extra security and separation and atomic updates and so on they offer, it's a lot like the stuff I like about #GrapheneOS, but I'm not sure if they're actually any more secure, since new root OS components can still be installed, it just requires a reboot. Does anyone know?

@nil I am still working (very slowly) on my own #Lisp, but I believe that Rich Hickey was absolutely right about #immutable data.

@jppelt @GotNothing @fatboy I hate to say it, but the closest thing we'll get anytime soon is #chromeOS.
and any gnu distro that hypothetically gets traction mainstream is probably going to look more like chromeOS anyway, #immutable like Fedora #silverblue / #kinoite or even #SteamOS

Hello, World!
I've been working on a hobby project for some time, and I recently released it. I call it
_Lightwhale_
and it's a free, minimalistic operating system streamlined for running Docker containers on bare-metal x86 servers. It strives to be zero-installation, zero-configuration, and zero-maintenance, and is very easy to use.
I used to run a home server with Ubuntu and Docker, but got fed up with updates, dist upgrades, reinstalls, and endless backups, restores, and rerereconfigurations. Lightwhale is specifically designed to eliminate all this and make home servers fun again. So if you run a similar setup, this is absolutely for you.
Lightwhale isn't limited to home servers, though, but can be used in a variety of use-cases like IoT hub, on-prem enterprise edge server. Anything Docker, really.
Try Lightwhale today! Or ... you know, whenever you have the time and feel up for it. But please, for the sake of your own precious spare time: Do it before your server reaches its next end-of-life ;)

@Linux_Is_Best Yes, bind-mounting a writable partition onto an immutable filesystem is a pretty basic and standard way of accomplishing writability on an immutable system. Lightwhale Linux is also immutable, and it does this too — only slightly improved: It uses overlayfs to merge the _persistence partition_ on top of the read-only, and it only does this for certain critical directors, like `/etc`. This way only changed files are persisted, which saves space and makes backup easier. And it does partitioning, formatting, overlaying, and formatting automatically upon request!
It's not unbreakable, though; write a crap `/etc/inittab` or `/etc/passwd` for instance, and the system is wrecked. But then again, most systems are...
#Lightwhale live-boots straight into an operational #Docker engine, and because it's #immutable it's literally maintenance-free and works out of the box, so try it out:
#lightwhale #docker #immutable
Dear #Immutable #Distro Developers:
Please follow the examples of OpenSuse Aeon and Vanilla OS. You should have as few preinstalled apps as you can. I can add extra stuff through layers or flatpak, but removing system packages from immutable systems is weird.
#Silverblue has gedit installed by default, and I can't remove it without removing Nautilus of all things. In #blendOS it's Neovim I can't get rid of. It's wack, yo.
#Flatpak in whatever tho. That stuff just slides right out.

@shipp It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish, I guess. If you want a Linux server to run #Docker containers, I have only one recommendation: #Lightwhale. It's a zero-installation, zero-configuration, and zero-maintenance #immutable Linux for #bare-metal servers that boots straight into a working Docker Engine. Try it:
