It was a brothel scene that birthed modern art. In 1865, the crowds went berserk in front of Manet’s painting of a courtesan— sobbing, shouting, getting into scuffles. Now, "the bored prostitute in her unmade bed is making its way to New York as a focal point of “Manet/Degas,” MOMA’s fall exhibition of "two city boys & the modern capital they painted." nytimes.com/2023/09/09/arts/de

"Water Lilies," Claude Monet, 1907.

Monet and water lilies go together like peanut butter and jelly. This was part of a series he did, capturing the blooms at different times of the day, and in different lights.

From the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX.

"The Pink Cloud," Henri-Edmond Cross, c. 1896.

Artistically, Cross was a great experimenter, here working with pointillist technique, but he'd later go on to bolder brushstrokes and laying the groundwork for Fauvism. He experimented with color theory, and was also a political anarchist, whose works often showed Utopian worlds...like this one.

From the Cleveland Museum of Art.

"The Garden Parasol," Frederick Carl Frieseke, c. 1910.

American-born Frieseke was a student of the Impressionists but eschewed their passion for landscapes and instead focused on his two main fascinations, light and women. His paintings have a remarkable technique, but are also quite male-gazey, if you get my drift.

But that parasol rocks.

From the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh.

"Seascape near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer," Vincent van Gogh, 1888.

A nice beach scene...well, as viewed from the beach scene! Analysis of this painting has found sand caught in the paint, so we know Vinnie was standing on the beach to paint this. A nice summer canvas.

From the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

I continued my musical exploration of Mel Bonis this weekend as well.

Here's Viviane (Lady of the Lake) op. 80, played by Anna Shelest.

"Banks of the Seine at Argenteuil," Edouard Manet, 1874.

Perhaps Manet's most vivid experiment in plein air painting, done while on a visit to Monet, whose wife and child were models. Another lovely summer scene.

"Golden Summer, Eaglemont," Arthur Streeton, 1889.

Streeton was an Australian painter who did this lovely Impressionist landscape during a drought, at the Eaglemont artists' colony outside Melbourne. Reminds me of the farm fields of home....

"After Bathing," Joaquin Sorolla, 1915.

Spaniard Sorolla gave us many paintings in the Impressionist style, of sunlit beaches and landscapes in Spain. He also did many monumental works with social and historical themes.

"Poppy Field," Claude Monet, 1881.

I tend to associate poppies with summer, and thus this makes for a stellar summer image. The trees, and the hazy mountains in the far background, just bolster that impression.
