[The term Creole in has differing connotations. It was initially used to denote people of mixed French and/or Spanish and African descent. Later, whites with French ancestry attempted to recoin the term to describe themselves and also to distinguish them from the white Americans in the city.

The book Degas and New Orleans, by Christopher Benfey, explores the connections between the black and white branches of Degas maternal family.]

Everyone is aware of Edgar Degas' paintings of ballerinas in the Impressionist style. But did Edgar Degas have African ancestry? We'll never know for sure. His mother, Celestine Musson Degas, was from a wealthy Creole family in New Orleans, reportedly a descendant of the city’s first French and Spanish arrivals. She was related to the Black inventor and engineer, Norbet Rillieux.

@AnneCamozzi I will have to look up more. I don’t remember any in Janson’s History of Art and don’t have any books on . Branching out from my traditional love which I have loved since art school decades ago. Lately I have been interested in and as I never used that medium and am in awe of those that mastered it. Thanks to I have found more artists to love and artwork to buy too.
