I always write “folks” as a gender neutral term but I see people writing “folkx” a lot and I don’t understand why. I researched its origin on the internet but still feel confused. Is one term more inclusive than the other? Is “folks” not actually gender neutral?

For those using the Toot! app, did you know that you can toggle on in the settings to “enforce image descriptions”, meaning that you can’t actually post your toots with images without first adding alt text? Makes it so easy to never forget to be inclusive of those in our disability community. Screenshot attached in case you have trouble finding it.

If you’re using a different app it only takes a minute to check whether it has a similar feature you can use. If it doesn’t then contact the app developers and ask for it. If enough people request it they’ll eventually add it.

Edited to add that another wonderful user pointed out that if you follow the “Please Caption” bot @PleaseCaption it will remind you to caption your images. A great solution of your app doesn’t have the enforce image descriptions feature.

I think the one little effort with great impact that mastonauts should care to adopt or keep to, is adding descriptions to the images, gifs, or videos they upload. 💚

It’s necessary to blind/deaf users (who rely on these descriptions, using assistive tech), and it’s potentially vastly useful to everyone else.
