When I went to pay for the one I'd picked, the bookseller asked if I wanted to wait to find out what the book was. When I said yes, she said ‘Look away now!’ just as the title was about to appear on the cash register display.

When I had to turn around to swipe my payment card, she threw a scarf over the display to keep the name of the book hidden.

Jeff Bezos would never do that for you.

I’m happy to leave Twitter behind and am hoping people I have followed there move over to Mastodon. I’ve always loved bookstores and libraries and being lost in a good book. In 1990 I founded and ran Califon Book Shop for 20 years and have a deep respect for authors and the publishers who recognize their talent. Also for all the #independentbookshops!
