Would really like to make this a good place for or whatever we want to call ourselves when we make the indexes for non-fiction books. And for people who need to know more about us and what we do, for example how to find a good indexer for their projects, how we work, what we need from clients etc. Anyway, must get on, two things on the go, an illustrated book of war art and an annual journal. Variety is the spice and all that.

Booked my place for the Society of day conference in September, the first UK in-person one since 2019. I’m leading a session comparing cryptic crossword setting and book index writing. Looking forward to it all. Who else plans to be at ? 🤓

Someone on the birdsite just posted: "I think that in about 3 minutes, AI is going to destroy the book profession". I know I have many other following me: do you have any reason to think he's right?

There are currently two types of on the fediverse.

Those using the protocol as designed. Adhering to privacy/noindex settings, implementing deletes, blocklists etc.

And those that simply crawl all public data (and RSS feeds) like ordinary crawlers.

The first are easily detected, because they don't operate in secrecy. They get hate from a few bullies. Their authors often cave under that bullying.

The second are left alone and continue indexing.

This is dumb.

Dear of - since we don't have private DMs on Mastodon (or Post!) yet, or private groups -

I just tested out the idea of the Twitter Circle on Twitter - just a very small place for specifically Canadian indexers. Let me know if you saw the tweet. I've only put a few in because I only know a few of you on Twitter (it's for me having Canadian questions about the business, etc.)

Twitter Circles are private to those the owner put in the circle, no one else sees the replies.

@bookstodon I just finished reading Judith Flanders' A Cast of Vultures, and it's a delightfully fun must-read for and alike. Here's a favorite but: "Editors know a little bit about a lot of arcane areas. 'I did a book on that once,' was the standard phrase for being able to name the seven hills of Rome, or knowing that bees have a positive electric charge and flowers a negative one. So I was happy to learn more". :blobcool:

It’s that book again. (This is getting silly now.)
After being in TIME magazine’s and the Washington Post’s top books of the year lists, Dennis Duncan’s ‘INDEX, A History of the’ (for which I did the, er, index) is also one of the ‘100 Notable Books of 2022’ in the New York Times. Go Dennis, go , go . 🥳

and -

I goofed by giving someone a quote based on the number of indexed pages (but I was working with draft pages, before typesetting) -

with the typeset pages, the number of pages has dropped considerably - so if I use that as a count I'm definitely undercharging.

Do I just take a loss on this?
But also, I'm not sure if charging by number of indexed pages is really the best benchmark - these are academic pages, it takes more time as well.

Any recommendations?

Please forgive me the praise sharing but I am chuffed with this. Dennis Duncan’s ‘INDEX, A History of the’ is in the Washington Post’s ‘50 Notable Works of Nonfiction’ of 2022. I did its human . (There is also a computer effort.)
– ‘Don’t skip this book’s own index, which is, of course, a work of art.’
Here’s hoping it’s an ongoing boost for all of us oft-invisible . Cheers Dennis.

Would you like to know more about book and what it is that professional like me do? Yes?

Here’s ‘An A to Z of Indexing’, which I wrote for National Indexing Day in 2021. There’s a little Welsh/Cymraeg in it too.
