Question for the #indexodon -- do you find #LinkedIn useful? If you do use it, do you connect more with individual authors or with publishing industry folks? I'm in the unusual position of having been an #indexer, mostly for scholarly books, for over a decade, but never had to deal with the business end of things, as I started out at an #indexing collective in my intentional community. I've lived here for 15 years and am thinking about how to establish my own client base when I eventually leave.

I have reached the point in my career where I am able to connect authors with amazing interests to similar authors because I have indexed both of their fascinating books and I love it 🥰 #indexodon
Currently #indexing The Age of Dissent: Revolution and the Power of Communication in Chile, 1780-1833. I'm going to love working on this project! #BookIndexing #indexodon

How do you deal with combining a word index and a topic index?
I'm indexing a large corpus of ancienttexts where it make a lot of sense to include the source language of keywords in parentheses. However there are, naturally, times when the subject is found in the text without the actual word being used.
Of course I can mention this in the preface to the index. And if I wasn't including the source language word in the keyword I wouldn't think twice about it.

Dear #indexers of #indexodon - since we don't have private DMs on Mastodon (or Post!) yet, or private groups -
I just tested out the idea of the Twitter Circle on Twitter - just a very small place for specifically Canadian indexers. Let me know if you saw the tweet. I've only put a few in because I only know a few of you on Twitter (it's for me having Canadian questions about the business, etc.)
Twitter Circles are private to those the owner put in the circle, no one else sees the replies.
What types of #indexes are there, what are the elements of an #index, and how do they interact? How avoid pitfalls of #indexing? These and many other questions for #indexodon get answered (in German) in this new contribution by Jochen Fassbender, freely available here: https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110769043-019

Umm… can a naval battle have “fighting terrain”? I need a subhead and “fighting terrain” seems more idiomatic than “fighting water,” but the use of a land-based word for maritime combat has me hesitating. Thoughts? #indexing #indexodon #AmIndexing #FunWithEtymology
PS. I really want to say “fighting merain,” but I know better. And it sounds too much like (sheep) murrain, which prompts some interesting visuals.

You know you're about to #index a good book when pg. 1 reads:
"Frankly, writing a biography of a ship is not unlike writing a biography of a person. It involves the same balance of historical context and individual grit. We are a product of our will, to be sure; but we are also products of the ideas and material world that swirl around us and shape us everyday. We can’t escape these currents, and ships can’t, either."

Doing some rote entry #indexing today, so I have a zombie movie on in the background. It's put me in mind of one of my favourite index entries, from a style book: "zombie test." The entry's fun is slightly ruined by the qualifier "for passive voice," however. #BookIndexing #indexodon

#indexodon and #indexers -
I goofed by giving someone a quote based on the number of indexed pages (but I was working with draft pages, before typesetting) -
with the typeset pages, the number of pages has dropped considerably - so if I use that as a count I'm definitely undercharging.
Do I just take a loss on this?
But also, I'm not sure if charging by number of indexed pages is really the best benchmark - these are academic pages, it takes more time as well.
Any recommendations?
I just searched the tag #indexodon and I've pinned it as a column so that I can follow our conversation. Recommend - this groups it together really well :)
