Aaaand I'm done with the first round of revisions and edits. :catjam: I expect to dive into the next book by the end of this month as 'Ada and the Singing Skull' still needs some final cleaning up.

The new publication date still stands (Dec. 1, not Nov. 16) in spite of the early completion. Consider this a forced retraining to slow the hell down, which was a valuable lesson I learned during the lockdowns. Anyhoo...

I don't look forward to the next stage outside the polishing up: writing the book blurb. We hates it, precioussss, and I know other writers feel the same way.

There's one more book to write for this series, and that'll be it. It's the logical sequel to end the story, but Prue and Freddy's adventures will obviously continue well beyond the last book. I'm going to miss writing this universe, but I'm not going to force more stories out of it as I don't want this to turn into an overly long and dragging collection, completely wrung dry of any sensible plot.

I was able to do a bit more tweaking with my site, including (I'm ashamed to say) the stylesheet, which now works (at long last!). However, my gallery page for 'The House of Ash' suddenly won't load the thumbnails. It was working perfectly yesterday, mind you. If this doesn't improve soon, I'll have to redo the entire page and just dump the damn thumbnails.

I guess I might as well get started on the book blurb. Ugh.

I decided to push the release date for 'Ada and the Singing Skull' back from Nov. 16 to Dec. 1 (just a two-week move). It isn't because the book won't be ready by mid-November, but because I want to give 'The House of Ash' some extra time in the spotlight before another book takes its place.

2024 will definitely see me turning the volume down and publishing two books. This year and last year were packed -- only because circumstances allowed me to work simultaneously on two (even three at one point) books the last couple of years. And that reshuffled my calendar to make room for more books than originally planned.

No more, man. No more. I'm not getting any younger, and circumstances like that rarely happen more than once (if at all). This year marks my 15th year writing and publishing, and I know sooner or later I'll need to bow out. And when that happens, I'd rather not burn myself out and point to that as the reason for retirement.

Maybe I've got another five years in me. We'll see.

I am in love with Sweden. It’s so similar in wet weather to Wales, & as green & glorious. Stockholm is an amazing city & I love hearing the wealth of languages as we travel Europe, although I’m now acutely aware of how little I understand the languages in these Northern European countries.
I’ve had a difficult relationship with language & place identity. Because of a chaotic, transient upbringing nothing gives me anxiety more than the question, ‘where are you from?’
Knowing ‘who I am’ had to come before I could even begin to answer ‘where I’m from’, & still it’s taken a long time for me to answer.
My (great) grandparents were economic migrants from across the British Isles to north Wales & just across the border in England. We’re English-speaking Welsh borderlands people.
Truly understanding the country of my birth meant educating myself on the deliberate dismantling of Welsh language & culture by English oppressors, & so I learned Welsh, embraced the beautiful minority culture that I shared a landmass with.
Did I then go too far?
English, my first language, is that of oppressors, colonisers, & slave owners, but perhaps I began to take too much responsibility for that; maybe my connection to the very language in which I write & think & dream, that is the language of my ancestors & grandchildren, became disjointed as this schism deepened.
I turned to creating literature as a way to explore this dichotomous life, employing narrative arcs in The MthR Trilogy to navigate through themes of language & place.
I emerge from that piece of writing a different woman, someone who has made peace with herself, & her mother tongue; someone who can acknowledge the difficult history of the English language while still embracing this gorgeous international linguistic kaleidoscopic form of communication spoken by so many.
