An analogy to the indigenous voice to parliament:

Imagine you are invited to a party of an acquaintance (maybe a work colleague, not a close friend). You arrive at a beautiful home and as you enter continue to marvel at the beauty of the place.
It's a perfect evening and you continue to enjoy the beautiful setting, delicious food and interesting conversations.
As the evening progresses, you talk to the host and some disconcerting information comes to light.
The house you have marveled at all night does not actually belong to the host of the party, in fact it belongs to an elderly couple currently locked in the cellar.
As your jaw hits the floor, the host insists that this is not as bad as it seems. In fact the elderly couple (or rather their parents) have been incarcerated for decades by the parents of the host. So not really his fault. In addition the host has cleaned the pool and upgraded the Wifi, so he has pretty much made up for anything his parents might have done wrong.
To show his good will, the host suggests to let the couple out of the cellar and ask them what they think of the party. He puts the question to all the guests, but people aren't quite sure how to feel about this......

Personally, I sincerely hope we let the couple out as a tiny first step.
