First – if the reader tends to gain self-gratification by feeling that they are more superior than others, whilst this toot is about that human characteristic, this toot is not aimed at being therapeutic. This toot will not inflate a person’s already inflated ego. So, if a person’s identity is based on “better than”, my toots will be annoying. In general, more humble people will appreciate my style of writing.
Narcissism (abbreviated to “Narc”) - Excessive preoccupation with or admiration of oneself. synonym: conceit. A personality disorder characterized by self-preoccupation, need for admiration, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem. (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition)
Laypersons (“folk psychologists”) may take sides, in that, they may label (“pigeon hole”) people they don’t like as narcissists. Narcissism isn’t all “bad”. ‘Good Vs Bad’ is not how psychologists think about narcissism. Though of course, there are people that do good and bad behaviours.
Second – the attached graph represents the typical population average (a “bell curve”). So, there is an average level of height and an average level of traits, or behaviours, that are classified as being part of a narcissistic temperament. However, personality traits are not singular units. Height is a definitive measurement, your either exactly 6 feet tall, or you’re not. Narcissism is part of personality. As such, it’s a characteristic of nature and nurture that can have varying levels, in different social contexts and at different ages (at different developmental stages throughout a person’s life). Narcissism is also related to belief (nurture). So, if a person was born into a culture that indoctrinated them to believe that a god created them to be superior, they’d be more narcissistic than if they were born into a culture that indoctrinated them to believe that all animals are equal. In this context, the objective reality, which is more accurate - is the question of, are humans more or less, equal to non-human animals? That is the benchmark in which to compare narcissism against (in this context). Another social context could be – are people from one country superior to people from another country? Racism is also a form of narcissism. There is something quite pathetic about a person committing unethical acts against another - because they believe their more “superior” (because they’re evidently not “superior” in the ways that matter. i.e., civilised behaviours).
Third – I have never met, nor never will, someone that displays a high level of narcissism that is aware that they have a problem (quite the opposite). Two famous social caricatures of people whom express extreme levels of narcissism are President Vladimir Putin and the X president Donald Trump. These people’s social media profiles fit the descriptive definition of narcissism – if they were not actual people, they’d be like the extreme cartoon caricatures of narcissists. So, in certain types of (celebrity) cultures, narcissists can be popular. That popularity is generally due to the emotive aspects that narcissists enjoy. For example, extreme forms of competition. Narcissists want to beat the other. A narc may say to paraphrase “it’s the winning that counts”. A narc doesn’t care how they win (e.g., they cheat). Therefore, it’s accurate to infer that the fuel industries are managed by narcs (e.g., greenwash as made them extremely rich). Extreme narcs get extremely rich in a market economy that’s controlled by the narcs.
There is - the lay persons (less informed, less accurate, confirmation biased) perception of how they think about other people’s and their own personality. For example, the average person, believes, on average, that they're better than the average person (& yes – that’s not possible) - when that quality is a socially desirable trait. For example, intelligence. On average, people want to feel 'good' about themselves. Even, or especially, the humans that are more immoral than the average. And many humans feel good about themselves by perceiving and believing that they are either better than others or feeling better that they are in better social circumstances than others. How many rich people make themselves feel better by giving some money to charity? Even whilst they vote for the forms of politics that doesn’t, for example, set a high tax rate for the rich. Fundamentally, “billionaires” is an effect of the ‘ruling classes’ (richer than) narcissism.
There is - the science of personality differences (E.g., the OCEAN model. The HEXACO model) in which personality traits are a statistical measurement of a population (based on the lexical system). For example, a population has an average height. It's an objective reality that a human’s height is closer to 1.77m (177 cm) than to 100m tall. In other words, there is a real, objective, average human height (though it’s a dynamic measurement). The same can be said for any organism that develops within the constraints of nature and nurture. The following statement is accurate (true or beyond a reasonable doubt. i.e., logical or rationale). On planet Earth - There are no Elephants that are the size of a Bee, there are no Bees that are the size of an Elephant.
If a human had no concept of the science of physics - they could be convinced (by others) that it's possible for bees to be the size of elephants. Or that, for example, Unicorns once existed. Or that Father Christmas is real (Etc). Many adults stop believing in Father Christmas due to conformity to the adult social norms – not because they come to understand more about physics. It’s generally socially acceptable for adults to believe in a God – but not Father Christmas. “Acceptable” in that adults believing in Father Christmas would be socially ridiculed (conformity). If a human does not understand human physiology sufficiently - they could believe in spirits (e.g., "ghosts"). And that primed psychological condition – can cause humans to perceive “ghostly” events that they subjectively perceive as not physical – but are physical.
So, what's belief got to do with the human personality trait of narcissism (someone may ask). Fundamentally, narcissism is based on a, comparably, inaccurate perception of self. Briefly, there are insecure & secure forms of narcissism (it's a more or less spectrum. That when measured by scientists, follows the 'bell curve' statistical mean).
A (religious, political, or economic) belief may subjectively indoctrinate humans to feel more superior than they objectively are. Religions may say that humans are superior to other creations. One political group may advocate that their party is more superior than another ("left Vs Right"). Capitalism promotes the perception that rich people are superior to less rich people. Or at least, if that's implicitly implied, capitalism enables the rich to be more vocal about their personal ideologies (e.g., their get rich schemes). So, what humans believe, the cultural stories people copy, affects how they perceive themselves and others. In general, certain forms of religion, politics & economics, increases the development of narcissism (in a population)
Humility is the antidote to narcissism. Objectively, humans should feel humbler; Subjectively, many humans believe they're extraordinary (in a comparative psychological sense). Ironically, being humble is a form of "superiority". In that it primes the mind to be more "real". More honest to the self & others. Socio-political & socioeconomic propaganda are the effects of narcissism. Narcissism, a delusion of superiority, is positively correlated with lying to the self & others. Narcissism is positively correlated with ignorance. Narcissism causes ignorance (a learning disability).
Why do humans need to feel better than another? Why do humans need to beat the other? (Competition). Why do humans prefer to believe in religious narratives that preach, whilst they're "sinful ", at least they're better than animals. Ultimately, Humans are evidently not ‘better than’ non-human animals. Humans are better at being human (species typical physiology). Humans have evolved to be ‘better’ within their ecological niche. But humans can’t photosynthesise as can plants. Humans can’t fly at ‘break’ neck speeds using echo locations (e.g., some species of bats). Non-human animals are better, or rather, more suited to their own environments. A squirrel can live unaided in a woodland – a habitat that many modern humans would perish in (because they have not learnt the knowledge of when, where, and what foods are edible in a natural habitat. We generally learn to go to the shops for food). “Superiority” is a harmful delusion.
Studying nature, studying reality, studying the science of evolutionary biology – mitigates narcissism. Humans are nothing without insects. Insects can survive without humans. Humans will not survive without insects. Narcissism is a back-to-front – a wrong away around form of belief. Narcissism degrades the feeling of appreciation. Humans are causing a 6th mass extinction event because, on average, humans are not appreciating, not focusing on, that which matters. Humans appreciate their money – what they spend their money on reflects what they appreciate. What they try to protect reflects their psychology. What they don’t protect can reflect their ignorance about reality, about ecology.

The personality characteristics - the subjective perceptions - emotions & psychologies that are associated with the belief that a person is:
1. Superior to another person or a population of people that all share a demographic (e.g., skin tone, sex, age, weight, income or professional status, etc).

#personality and/ or #adolescence researchers! Which #conferences taking place in #Europe are you attending or would you recommend for 2023? Looking for some inspiration since I would love to connect in person but avoid flying.
So far, I am aware of DPPD in Salzburg, but there’s probably more?

I’m a #postdoc @Ecophy_CEBC @CNRS 🇫🇷 specialized in #behavioural and #cognitive #ecology
My research is focused on proximate and ultimate causes of #individualdifferences in #BehaviouralPlasticity and #cognitiveabilities in #bird populations using both #experimental and #theoretical approaches.
I’m facinated by #cephalopods 🐙 l’m a climbing addict 🧗🏻♀️and a shy (at first) but passionate #biologist.
Happy to join #mastodon and meet new people.

What's the next step for #neuroimaging analyses of individual differences? This question has occupied my thoughts a lot over the past few months. A recent preprint from Luke Chang & co. offers an interesting perspective: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.08.23.504939v1
