"Chasm between action and scientific reality laid bare in stocktake - Rise in global must be halted within two years to avoid the worst – and it can be done, says report"

"The chasm between the climate action being taken and the emissions cuts required is set out bluntly in the new “global stocktake” report from the UN, produced in collaboration with nations.

As it stands, nations will belch out about 22bn tonnes more carbon dioxide in 2030 than the climate can cope with if the global temperature rise is to be held to 1.5C and the worst impacts of the climate crisis are to be avoided. That 22bn tonnes that must be eliminated is equivalent to the combined emissions of the top five polluters today: , , , and .

Furthermore, the systemic transformation of every aspect of society that the report says is required needs to start kicking in quickly enough to halt the relentless rise of emissions seen since the Industrial Revolution within just two years."

.

I was born in Smethwick and worked at Round Oak Steelworks in Brierley Hill before coming to live in London and Sydenham. Hence this article linking all the Black Country manufacturing of the Crystal Palace and it's final resting place less than a mile from my home fascinates me.

I hope you will find it interesting too and a reminder of the times when we could really make stuff.

@scubbo ... Been a rough 500-year existential transition ...I still think this isn't though perhaps they'll have it their way now that we hypothetically are able to destroy all humanity... We will see

With machine learning, industrial robotics, and IoT advances, we could call it the next industrial revolution. Whether it is a revolution or the culmination of digital transformation, open-source software is one of the drivers behind our time's industrial and societal changes. Business Today has a great piece by Ravi Jadhav about it.

In 1832, this was the longest railway tunnel in the world, at just over 1 mile. It's in amazing condition, and today I got to explore it. Despite what Google maps says, it is not a valid cycle route as one end is permanently blocked off, and the other is usually locked. Imagine digging this nonsense out without machines.

Industrial Revolution iron method ‘was taken from Jamaica by Briton’ - Wrought iron process that drove UK success was appropriated from black metallurgists, records suggest"

"An innovation that propelled Britain to become the world’s leading iron exporter during the Industrial Revolution was appropriated from an 18th-century Jamaican foundry, historical records suggest.

The Cort process, which allowed wrought iron to be mass-produced from scrap iron for the first time, has long been attributed to the British financier turned ironmaster Henry Cort ... Now, an analysis of correspondence, shipping records and contemporary newspaper reports reveals the innovation was first developed by 76 black Jamaican metallurgists at an ironworks near Morant Bay, Jamaica. Many of these metalworkers were enslaved people trafficked from west and central Africa, which had thriving iron-working industries at the time.

Dr Jenny Bulstrode, a lecturer in history of science and technology at University College London (UCL) and author of the paper, said: “This innovation kicks off Britain as a major iron producer and … was one of the most important innovations in the making of the modern world.”

There is no more any time to be skeptical of . The will be bad for us all. We need all to act know and instead of weeping in 25 years.

All that remains now of the Lead Mines at Woodhead, Carsphairn are a few ruined buildings, a few slag heaps and some mildly alarming holes in the hillside. Once a bustling wee community of around 300 people lived and worked here.
