In Natural History of Infectious Disease Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet outlines the principle that pathogen and host tend to equilibrium / accommodation. The exception that he lists is where there is more than one host. The pathogen then will tend to increase in virulence in one.

Very cool and important new study by the Tsimane Health and Life History Project team. From the abstract:

"Our model suggests that […] more remote communities are not conferred protection via greater distance from outside sources of infection, due to common features of small-scale societies that promote rapid disease transmission such as high rates of travel and dense social networks.”
