"when a consensus view is false, misleading, or overly simplistic (as is evident in dominant COVID narratives), strategies like lateral reading won’t be enough, and may even reinforce a belief that false or misleading information is true"

As a and one of the few people still masking in my library/on campus, I really appreciate this essay: “Dominant COVID Narratives and Implications for Information Literacy in the ‘Post-Pandemic’ United States”

My poster is at @ALAAC23 without me! Thanks to Sandra Echols for presenting our work "Did a bot do your work? Addressing pre-trained text generation apps in information literacy instruction" (she just sent me this pic)

Hi
We often tell library users, "searching is iterative; keep trying different terms and resources"

Does anyone have a nice format or template for iterating -- one that invites users to articulate what was unsatisfactory about the previous iteration? Or, "unsatisfactory" sounds very deficit model -- but what else they want to find, or what their goals are for the next round

Hi folks,
Can you teach lateral reading in a one-shot? What about a one-session workshop unconnected to a class?

More & general design of anything online needs to start from the fact that white supremacists have been using the internet in well-organized ways literally since before there was an internet.

Think they started recently? Try 1996.
No, wait. Actually, 1990.
No, actually, hold up: even that was an outgrowth of a BBS started in 1984.

"Unprepared" at this point mostly just means somewhere on a spectrum that includes "willfully ignorant," "seeking plausible deniability," & "quietly colluding."

Information literacy skills aren't just for high school students. Adults can learn (or re-learn) important skills around factchecking and vetting sources and claims.

On Tuesday, April 25, 4-6 p.m. (Pacific), we're presenting, with our statewide partners at the WSU Murrow College of Communication, a special "Mini" MisinfoDay virtual event with a series of short talks and workshops.

I get the concern with AI - or 'essay bots' as they call them here... but the response is like burying heads in the sand. AI tools like this will be part of these children's world. They need to be taught how to use AI - appropriately, ethically, safely & responsibly. Also, understanding how accuracy isn't guaranteed. Those 'old-school' information literacy skills and the ability to spot have never been more important.

I’ve got an article in the latest issues of Art Libraries Journal about library teaching, and the pandemic. It is open access doi.org/10.1017/alj.2022.18

Trying to learn to feel proud rather than awkward about my work. Going through a big love/hate relationship with this paper which took a very long time to write. And very nearly stayed in the drafts folder forever!
