I was reading about a PhD in Information Studies program at UCLA. (I recently had an ah-ha moment regarding #InformationStudies) With all my programming classes and interdisciplinary degrees I might stand a chance of getting accepted. But. UCLA is on the complete opposite side of the country. I can't tell you have soul-sucking it is to live in a red state with poor quality universities. It is almost financially impossible for me to move, not to mention leave my family alone.

Just switched servers, so a re-#introduction! I teach #informationstudies & #digitalhumanities at UCLA, and I'm at work on a book about data in global supply chains. (ETA: shut up.)

I just finished some work, e.g., on shipping data: it turns out cargo ships receive and transmit huge amounts of data. They're "floating data terminals," as one technologist would have it.

I'm a scholarly communication specialist and researcher at Cambridge University Libraries. My work crosses over #informationstudies and #STS to critically assess and intervene in the overlapping worlds of academic publishing, open science, governance and the digital commons.

I'm currently finalising my first monograph (for the University of Michigan Press) on the relationship between open access publishing and the commons.

Also, by way of introduction, I am director of California Rare Book School (#calrbs), a continuing education program for #librarians, #rarebook enthusiasts, and people interested in #museums that is operated out of #ucla Department of #InformationStudies. We are dedicated to #SocialJustice, #ethics, and #global approaches to #BookHistory and #bibliography. 2023 course list is published on December 1, 2022.
