(setq echo-keystrokes 1e-6)
(FYI Zero means never echo.)

If you want a sophisticated editor, go to starter kits like #DoomEmacs or #Spacemacs. But if you want something that you can learn from, and still pretty complete, Emacs Configuration Generator by @pkal is definitely for you.
