An influence on the 80s movie “Cat People” was Charles Williams. Going to have to re-watch that. #inklings https://fellowshipandfairydust.com/2023/04/17/inklings-and-shapeshifters-charles-williams-theology-and-paul-schraders-cat-people/

I don’t have time to draw currently but my youngest son wanted me to share his art of Ayo 🇫🇷/Callie 🇬🇧, as she appears in Splatoon 3 in the tableturf battle mode.
This is one of his first art with an iPad/Procreate!

Why Turkish Delight in the Narnia stories?
https://daily.jstor.org/turkish-delight/
I recently wondered if the luscious descriptions of food in the Narnia stories were influenced by the scarcity of food during wartime rationing

Is this the first appearance of Aslan in literature? Written by Charles Williams and first published in 1931 here we meet a tremendous lion. My question… was C.S. Lewis influenced by this passage in his invention of Aslan two decades later? At the time it was written, Jack and Charles had not met, nor did they know each others work. I’d be very interested in any comments.

#Inklings From a letter, by CS Lewis
Nothing much has happened to me except that I saw a rabbit yawn. I suppose people who keep tame ones have seen it often but this was a wild rabbit and I thought it a v. curious sight. It was a very bored triangular yawn in the middle of a long hot afternoon...

Neville Coghill habitually took notes at lectures and minutes of meetings in Chaucerian English, just a small sample will suffice from 1923, never mind the context!
“Sir Lewis was ther; a good philosópher
He hadde a noblé paper for to offer.
Well couthe he speken in the Greeké tongue;
And yet, his countenance was swythé yong.”

On the anniversary of Charles Williams death in 1998, I with a friend sought out his grave in the graveyard of St. Cross Church, Oxford. We attached the following of Charles' poems to his grave (changing 'house' in the first line for 'grave') and sat a while in the Spring sunshine thinking of him and his work. More here…

The Geste of Beren and Luthien
Book XIII.
Into the vast and echoing gloom,
more dread than many-tunnelled tomb
in Labyrinthine pyramid
where everlasting death is hid,
down awful corridors that wind
down to a menace dark enshrined;
down to the mountain's roots profound,
devoured, tormented, bored and ground
by seething vermin spawned of stone;
down to the depths they went alone.

Dec. 15th 1945:
“... I am (these last 6 months) immersed in a v. different poet who I think great – Charles Williams: the two volumes of his Arthurian poems Taliessin and The Region of the Summer Stars. Inexcusably difficult, as I always told him, but here there really is something behind the difficulty – that something wh. we all need most in literature at present & wh. I wd. call opaque splendour – thick, rich, solid, heavy – porphyry, gold diamond.”
CS Lewis ~ Collected Letters
#Inklings The Tolkien grave at Wolvercote, Oxford.
Tolkien’s relationship to Edith, and his deep love for her are perhaps even more romantic than his fictional treatment of the subject. To be Luthien, the most beautiful and desired of her people in Tolkien’s eyes, was the highest regard he could possibly give a woman. Further it expresses Tolkien as almost feeling he doesn’t quite deserve the grace that is Luthien, even though Beren, and Tolkien are worthy men.

#Inklings In the Oxford Crematorium... off the ring-road at Headington, and just outside the furthest chapel from the entrance... there is a small plaque on the wall. It was placed there at the behest of C.S. Lewis following the death of his beloved wife Joy Davidman.
#Inklings CS Lewis ‘Eden’s Courtesy’…
Such natural love twixt beast and man we find
That children all desire an animal book,
And all brutes, not perverted from their kind,
Woo us with whinny, tongue, tail, song, or look;
So much of Eden's courtesy yet remains.
But when a creature's dread, or mine, has built
A wall between, I think I feel the pains
