The tutorials I could find were not specific enough for me and I eventually made this jsfiddle to help me suss it out:

I still find #inline frustrating to read, insofar as it connotes to me an emphasis rather than meta-text. I suspect that there's an age difference there - I imagine that younger people (I'm 40) are much more able to separate the function of hashtags as meta-information than emphatic.

I like trailing hashtags - with my programmer hat on it's nice to have the categorical information available but distinct from the semantic content; I'd say also there's a case on something like Mastodon where hashtags could be elided (ie, I choose whether I want to see them in text) - the problem with that being that the horse has very much bolted and hashtags are very often inline, embedded as a doubling function - both semantic and meta-text.

This is a really interesting subject to me though - so thanks.

Useful advice for people on Mastodon, whether new or not: Episode 2, You'd Have To Be Hashtag Blind.

There are people in the world who are visually impaired. Honestly, at one trivial level we all are -- forget your glasses, get hung over, have a bright light shining on your screen, and you need software to make allowances. You can zoom the text, Select All to fix the contrast, change brightness and contrast levels, and so on. But for some people, the visual impairment isn't situational or temporary, and for them a common solution is a Screen Reader, a piece of software that interacts with their web browser in some way and reads out what it sees.

Unfortunately, Screen Readers are bloody awful.

The awfulness shows up when #hashtags are inserted into a post. There are two problems.

First, when you #include a #hashtag in your #text, a Screen Reader will read it out: "when you hashtag include a hashtag hashtag in your hashtag text...". That makes it painful to "read" your post, so the suggestion is to relegate your hashtags to the end. #advice #useful #PayAttention

Second, with a screen-reader, you never know if the ending hashtags really are the end or not, so you can waste time reading them only to discover you didn't need to. The suggestion there is to put your hashtags #inline in the #body of your #post.

If you've spotted the problem there, congratulations -- whether or not your eyes are functional, your brain is working fine.

#Inline can spoil the visual flow for the reader. But allows the author to write naturally. There's a temptation to tag nearly every word for #FOMO on a potential new follower.

A #list on the end can leave it without context. But allows the reader to quietly ignore them as superfluous to the toot's actual content.
