What’s the difference between Iridium and Inmarsat satellite phones? Inmarsat phones operate off of Geostationary satellites over 22,000 miles altitude in high earth orbit. As of 2023 there are 14 of these stationary satellites. They orbit around and focus on the equator. The communication path on the Inmarsat system is from your satellite phone to one of the satellites. Then it goes to a ground station and through the local networks to the receiver and back. (Up next is Iridium)….

@LunaRogue depends on the network in question and how well it's interconnected.
For example, you may have double-digit ms on a #5G tower that is fiber-connected, triple-digits if it uses RF links that are pretty clogged and potential timeouts and packet losses with shitty networks like #DTAG since they don't peer on #DECIX and underprovidion their peers abused as upstream|s [#Cogent & #Level3]...
And in some cases, you've to deal with mobile networks of cruise ships that are on #Inmarsat BGAN

Uh. Oh. Here we go again.
Getting some early data that 4F1 (APAC) #inmarsat is suffering (another) outage.
Our C and L Band ACARS is Ok at the moment.
Double checking voice (aircraft calls).
Services affected:

FleetOne

IsatDataPro (IDP)
ADSC coverage right now.
If you click the 'U' button you can see the military aircraft. Nice collection of them over APAC which is great to see after #inmarsat outage a few days ago.
You can read about how we track them over the ocean on my #github https://thebaldgeek.github.io/
@jbaggs
I'd love to see more for sure. I have no idea how these things work, but given they are now a private company and the UK governments involvement with their proposed purchase by Viasat, I am not holding my breath till we see more info.
My website is all about satcom ACARS, so I'm more looking for information about the move to the I-6 satellite.
But yeah, 'more details' please and thanks #Inmarsat
The #Inmarsat update we have all been waiting for... the one that gives a hint as to what happen:
"Inmarsat has recovered the I-4 F1 satellite, which suffered a partial loss of power. That loss of power invoked automatic procedures on the satellite that led to the suspension of services."
Given that, I think its a very impressive recovery they have been able to pull off.
I'm sure they will be all the more pressed to move over to the new I-6 satellite and when they do, we will try and keep up!
There is a pretty good write up on the #Inmarsat outage over the past few days here:
https://runwaygirlnetwork.com/2023/04/operators-switch-to-hf-as-inmarsat-confirms-i-4-f1-satellite-outage/
#Inmarsat said in a news release dated 18Apr2023 that an outage on its I-4 F1 satellite started at 2114Z on 16Apr2023.
They say they immediately started the process to transfer maritime safety services to a contingency satellite. This was successful.
They next started the restoration of Classic Aero services and expected this to be done in a matter of hours.
Next they plan to transfer those services back from the contingency satellite and try to restore other services.

Inmarsat Working To Recover From Satellite Outage #itnews #inmarsat http://mwyr.es/3onyEsH
4F1 Asia Pacific #Inmarsat aero services are starting to trickle in.
Getting a few voice calls from aircraft starting to show up.
STDC (marine broadcast) is still very weak and I cant get any data from it, but its there.
That was a huge outage.... Just amazing.
I'd still really really like to know what happen....

Many relevant seismic waveforms appear to be unavailable from the #IRIS and #Geonet repositories.
I wonder if this has to do with the #Inmarsat #satellite #outage.
If so this is a really nasty single point of failure.

"Aircraft travelling to and from New Zealand have had to switch to communicating their location by voice, after the failure of a key communications satellite.
The British-owned Inmarsat I-4 F1 satellite experienced on a fault on Monday.
A spokesperson for Airways NZ said the satellite usually provided some communications coverage for aircraft across the Asia Pacific region.
