Flowers .

The peonies and huckleberry were given to me by my mother-in-law when my sister-in-law moved away.

My mom planted the iris bulbs when she stayed with me a couple years ago.

The columbine is a volunteer descendant from the original two columbine I planted over a decade ago. One was dark purple and the other a lovely pink. Both colors still show up but so do others. Genetics are so much fun!

It feels like a garden of family connections, history, and potential.

Coming home after time away - being surprised by changes in the garden - I love that! Today it was seeing how sun and rain coaxed Tinkerbird (dwarf rhododendron) to ‘come out’! So fragrant, so gay!

For small gardens like ours, here’s one way of making the most of space - instead of a privet/beech hedge (unproductive) we’ve got a very productive damson hedge with companion tree, which looks like it’s going to be exceptionally fruity this year.

It’s been a colder Spring than in recent years here, making me spend less time in the garden than last year - plus a good third of it is about to be demolished to make way for some new building work. So there’s less happening than I expected at the start of March. But come rain come shine there are one or two plants guaranteed to put on a show with stunning warm colours. Two January garden shrubs are at last flowering! First up, chaenomeles speciosa - a quince, though the fruit will be small & not very appealing. But the colour of the flower is great, deep red.
