I know I could be stepping into a well-known problem: maturity models that imply the need to get to the "final level" rather than be differing levels of investment (and it's okay to not "move on").

When open sourcing isn’t possible at your employer, fallback to inner sourcing! Who knows, maybe that in itself will lead to open sourcing!

I’m pushing to have as many repos with an ‘internal’ visibility in our GitHub org, because I want other teams to stumble at our code, get interested, and get involved.

Documentation is key for that to happen organically!

I take grade pride in writing great docs and it’s paying of: my work is being discovered by other teams, who want in.

#TIL about Inner Source, which is basically Open Source minus the Software Freedoms. Coined by (surprise, surprise) that great friend of Free Software, Tim O'Reilly, Inner Source is the parasitic use of Open Source development practices by proprietary software companies, with no respect for the software freedoms of the people using the resulting software. *shudder*
