They say talking to yourself is the first sign of madness...

They are, in fact, wrong. The first sign of madness is Suggs walking up your driveway šŸ˜

My inner voice is on good form this morning.

Just said to myself (upon spilling some water while cleaning something):

"Well. That accomplished the intended goal. And there was also an unintended and unanticipated consequence."

Doesn't seem that positive now that I write it out, but it is a stark contrast to cursing myself or my bad luck.

I like that approach to dealing with when things don't work as intended, and will try to hang onto it.

"Many writers say they can actually hear the voices of their characters ā€“ here's why" āœ’ļø

"Over 60% of the 181 participants said they heard their charactersā€™ voices, and over 60% said their characters sometimes acted of their own accord."

Very cool survey study on mental auditory imagery during the creative writing process.

You have been through and survived so much. Even if you donā€™t feel that you have ever struggled, the fact remains, you are hereā€¦wakingā€¦breathingā€¦contributing. Many voices may try to shout you down. Reply by thriving. However, one voice stays with you. It is your own. It is powerful beyond measure. Never allow your own voice to deny you, betray you, suppress, or oppress you. Harness your voice and ride the affirming and powerful you teach it.

A health problem in my late 20s convinced me to give up alcohol, junk food, and pesticides as often as I could. About seven years later, I found myself going on a trip that was completely unreal.*

It made wonder: Did my mind completely renew itself? After seven years did all of the cells regenerate, giving it a kind of tune up that I never dreamed Iā€™d experience?

Itā€™s been a wild ride ever since.

When I first learned to read I was aware that I 'heard' a voice as I read... that was not MY voice. I've realized over the years how that reading voice has shaped my thinking... how I 'hear' myself think, especially as I write.
This Atlantic article was well written--better than your usual journalistic report on psychology. Raises some facinating questions. I have so many levels of 'self-talk'... I could write a book on my own experiences alone. theatlantic.com/science/archiv

Thinking about how your inner dialogue can help or hinder you?. What do you do with that chatter? What does the science say?
