@ingalls @mikemccaffrey I had this problem recently camping in Oregon. I started seeing smoke and orange skies. I couldn’t receive any AM/FM broadcast radio stations. Couldn’t reach any #AmateurRadio repeaters with my mobile rig running 50W. I could hear USFS traffic on my scanner but nothing fire related (which made me feel somewhat better).

In the end I texted my brother with my Garmin #InReach and asked him to look up fire info in my area. Luckily was clear but not really sure what I’d have done otherwise.

Anyone use a #Zoleo satellite messenger? I am trying to decide between it and the Garmin #inReach. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

Any Garmin Inreach users know if you can overlay your intended route/course on the device share page? So viewers can see where I am along or off the route.

I have used Spotwalla for this, but I thought another runner told me it was possible to do it directly in Garmin's share page.

Isn’t it awfully premature because the functionality isn’t yet available? We used to call this tactic “FUD”. Announce a product super early and scare all the customers away from competitors, such as Garmin #InReach

Finally, a word about general backcountry connectivity, always carry a PLB with you. While I’ve spent a reasonable amount of $ paying Garmin for their inReach services myself, PLBs and the related COSPAS infrastructure has been built from the ground up to be a protected service and work robustly.
