@r00tAdmin With that said, I think #Reddit and #Twitter can both can crash and burn for all I care. They are failed businesses with arrogant CEOs. But all #FOSS like the #Fediverse face a similar #sustainability issue. And we need to be reminded that the "Free" in "Free and Open Source Software" is principally for "Freedom". No single service can sustainably be rendered free of charge on the internet.

It is my intention to block any commercial companies operating fediverse servers from accessing mastodon.radio users and content.

I think that companies like meta building fediverse compatible services is an existential threat to this network and the first step in Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.

I've disabled "content cache retention period" because I didn't realise that it was removing posts from other servers even if they are direct messages or boosts or replies in a thread etc.

It was set to 7 days so if you've seen stuff vanish for no obvious reason, this might be why.

I frequently see posts where instance admins are bemoaning Mastodon's lack of a given feature. Many times these are features that other Fedi microblogging systems like Akkoma/Pleroma already implement well.

So why aren't those as popular? Why are folks sticking with Mastodon?

Hey #MastodonAdmin geniuses! Anyone know why my Accounts summary page (the one that shows recent instance signups) is timing out? I can see in PGHero that the query seems to be taking forever! It usually completes after 2-3 minutes. We don't have that many users tho (only about 25). Very strange. Any ideas anyone?

Just completed the 4.1.2 update. So far seems like everything is working. We created several scripts to automate the process to ensure the least amount of downtime possible. Also we applied 3 patches to the stock 4.1.2:
- Updated the length of posts to 1024 characters.
- Added the pending pull request to put server roles back into profiles: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/21393
- Added icon path to QR code for 2FA to point to the favicon. Not all 2FA apps support the image parameter but it's there for those that do.

I've been thinking a lot about the post history #migration problem. What happens when your #instance shuts down or you need to move for personal reasons? I've figured out some potential solutions for people who still have access to their old account or partial data with varying levels of verification certainty, but I've recently been focusing on the situation of people who have already lost their old home instance. Perhaps they lost access to all their data due to a shutdown or compromised server and never downloaded their account archive in the past. Theoretically, some of their data could be salvageable from remote storage on other federated instances across the #Fediverse, right? Can any #InstanceAdmin weigh in? Maybe someone who knows #ActivityPub well? Or perhaps people who know the #Mastodon API have insight?

@corin_ja sorry to hear that. I read some about what had been happening at @mastodon.lol. Why not come over to @Universeondon. It’s been really good here. I have just asked if there is a tech/mod team here supporting our instance admin. I do hope all #InstanceAdmin take care of themselves, especially with the recent influx of new Mastodonians.

Does anyone know why some #relays that are listed as ‘open registration’ seem to just hang and never let your #instance join? I have tried adding a few open ones from relaylist.com that are ‘open’ and most work, but some like relay.fedi.agency (the largest one) simply do not let me join. Is there some requirement I’m missing?

I'm still looking for any resources on Mastodon/Hometown CSS templating, edits, design, etc. 😓

I'd love to give my instance a design refresh but don't have much knowledge beyond being able to follow existing guides or tweak someone else's templates. My searching around this has been fruitless.
