Like many others I came here in the great #migration a few weeks ago. I joined this instance because it was basically the only one I seemed to be able to get on at the time, with a thought of moving to an instance more specific to my interests later (prob LGBT or books-related). But a couple of weeks in, I'm wondering if I really need to? This instance seems pretty decent and I've no idea how to find other ones anyway! I joined mastodon.social as a starting point. The upcoming suspension of these instances (.social and .online) by other instances is annoying (no opinion yet but at a practical level, it sucks).

I've been blogging in the past, on a website I set up myself, so I'll probably set up an instance myself one day. In the meantime, what are my choices, as a social scientist, based in Europe (Benelux)?

I think if you have a specialized interest there's a Mastodon instance for you. But if you have multiple equal interests you're "stuck" with one of the general ones. Which in itself isn't bad but makes you put more work into curating your little bubble 🤷
