Not that I’m a super heavy user though, so even if something didn’t move over right, I probably won’t even notice.

First migration, pretty easy and it works well.

Only issue I’ve had is that lists can’t be imported/transferred …?

If so, it kinda tracks with lists not seeming like a mature feature yet. Which is a shame because it feels like it’d be a simple script to consume the exported lists CSV and apply it to a new account.

Similarly, followed hashtags are gone too …?

Reading through the #JustMyToots hashtag, I saw some posts about migration, and this led me to wonder... if anyone is working on (or has released) a tool to allow you to migrate your POSTS to another server, not just follows and followers? Migrating reactions may be tricky/not ok from a consent perspective, but original posts should be possible to move.

We went through this back in the LiveJournal days, when DreamJournal and other services made this possible, so people didn't lose all their post history. When this is possible with Fedi it will make moving instances less like leaving a whole social network.

Data portability tools need to be made for ALL socials btw

We aren't really truly respected as Digital Citizens in the social space until we are able to own ALL our data and MOVE it.

Imagine a world where we can take ALL our tweets, all our Facebook posts, all our MySpace posts, all our G+ posts and yes, all our LiveJournal posts, let's face it, many of us here have at least half a decade of those (that we all downloaded and archived, of course, which has been possible) and deposit them into Fedi, so people (or just ourselves) can search through them (if we want!)

But we should be enabling this at the VERY least for instance migration!

One key design flaw of Mastodon is that you cannot copy across posts from one instance to another when you migrate servers.

As such, I'm having to manually repost certain posts, so that they're not lost to the void when Mastodon.lol shuts down forever.

The last toot I wrote was to announce my #migration to my new account. That has therefore stayed at the top of my old feed.

But I wish I had also added it in the profile before #migratinginstances , and/or changed my old profile name to "Old Account." That would have been more visible to anyone glancing at it.

I don't know anything about these #instances. I'm just forwarding the information.

When I migrated, I had the same issue. Most of my time "hemming and hawing" was trying to decide which server I wanted to move to.

Not gonna lie... My eventual choice was because I accidentally clicked my mouse on one of the options, and I just went with that.

#Universodon seems very nice though. Turns out there are a lot of great people here. It's a good "general interest" server, and that works out well for me. I have multiple topics I post about.

Almost all of my followers migrated nicely. The automated migration process takes a long time, sometimes several hours. Be VERY patient.

Change your old profile to say where you migrated to, and RT your favorite old toots from your new acct, BEFORE you begin the actual #migration process. Toots do not migrate. (I have a few old ones I plan to RT again later.)

This may help others ~ Now 2 days after migration from mstdn.party I still have lost quite a few from list of folks I followed. Having small acct I was able to review archived list downloaded before change. ALL of people missing from my following list after migration were from mastodon.social instance. They now all showed as my following being pending. Maybe they would eventually complete process, but I found just clicking pending off and then refollowing solved the problem.
Note that steps I took likely not feasible with larger account. Mastodon.social is huge instance and if left alone 'pending' issue may have resolved on its own. I'll never know. #feditips #mastodonmigration :mastodon:
