@fsnk @jerry very true. And the problem with a decentralized platform like this is that there isn't a central registry where you can look up all the instances and owners. The best we have right now is putting out a message asking for boosts and having people follow or tag their profile with #InstanceOwners or something like that.

What exactly are the benefits of being on a Masto instance dedicated to ones affinity/professional group when you can follow anyone and post across the network anyway?

Considering moving my Mastodon cache storage and PostgreSQL database to an old gdrive enterprise storage that happens to be from the era that it was "unlimited" and still is for us loyal users. I would have then only to worry about CPUs and RAM if I'd ever need to scale up.

With rclone + Google Drive API + fusermount you can actually mount Google Drive as a mount point on Linux. My only uncertainty is can Mastodon read that data? It works for my other server but the caching mechanism is a mystery to me, because the files are not actually consuming any space on the server.

I already have rclone mount set up and in place, now I just need to copy over the files via rsync. What command did you use @lari and how long did it take? Mine is stuck at "sending incremental file list", I guess there are tons of files...
