Our preferential system of voting gives Australians the opportunity to loosen the stifling grip of the two party system while maintaining political stability.
For the most part, we are only given two choices in terms of government, so you should almost never give your first preference to the Coalition or Labor. Put your preferred government (out of those two) second.
You can even put them further down the list, as long as you preference them above the government you want to avoid. The only time this doesn't apply is when you are offered no viable alternatives.
Research the others. See who else might better represent you. Make them number one. We don't have to live in Groundhog Day.
I'm a Green, but this is not just for Greens voters.

If #RankedChoiceVoting is adopted only in municipal elections, it still creates interest that draws more people to the polls for the other elections on the ballot. And it demonstrates the virtues of voting that way, generating support for applying it to other offices and providing any technological upgrades needed to support it.
