@heuser I agree with you that he didn't necessarily need to allow this (fossil fuel dependency need not be powered by U.S. fossil fuels), so I this as a blemish on his record, though I also agree with @RememberUsAlways that there's only one viable major party for climate progress in the US currently, and that's going to continue to be the case at least until we switch enough places away from #FirstPastThePost election systems to #RankedChoiceVoting (a.k.a. #InstantRunoffVoting).

I think it's less useful to see it as a "sin" than to just move onto the next battle, whether it be lawsuits against the project or otherwise.

#RCV fails to deliver diversity and broad choice in candidates, giving constituents only a short-term high.

As embarrassing as this #House #Speaker debacle may be for Republicans, it is nice that they recognize that a body shouldn't choose its single leader by plurality vote, or else they'd be unable to vote for R alternatives to #KevinMcCarthy without wasting their votes and electing Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker.

They should put that conviction into practice and pass the #FairRepresentationAct to make #InstantRunoffVoting a reality for the election of their members, too.

I think we could mostly solve #gerrymandering by making larger districts with ~5 representatives instead of just 1 and then using #SingleTransferableVote. That would strike a nice balance between local & proportional representation. For single-person positions, like presidents/governors/mayors, STV becomes #RankedChoiceVoting (aka #InstantRunoffVoting aka #AlternativeVote) which eliminates the spoiler effect and leads to more civil campaigns.

Why does #Alaska insist on finalizing its 1st-round count before revealing any 2nd or 3rd choices? It wouldn't be hard to reveal how many voted Begich Palin Peltola, how many voted Begich Peltola Palin, etc. Waiting until they can announce 1st-round results makes #RankedChoiceVoting (#InstantRunoffVoting) seem far more complicated and burdensome than it is. And it feeds into misunderstandings like "#Murkowski is behind #Tshibaka," when she's not not really "behind" in what counts. #RCV #IRV

It's great that we might get #RankedChoiceVoting / #InstantRunoffVoting for future Portland elections. It would be nice if we had them for this year's #oregon governor's race, which has a Democrat, a Republican, and an "independent".

Georgia's primary was a mess - but they narrowly avoided a runoff! If they hadn't, voters would've needed to go back to the poll a second time. Would voters go through that hassle?

If they had #RankedChoiceVoting, also called #InstantRunoffVoting, this would not be a concern. It's equivalent to a normal runoff election, but without the second/third/fourth time at the ballot box.
