I attended this talk today. It’s incredibly rare to have educators who intentionally want and find joy in making spaces & education with the inclusion of disabled learners in mind. I feel really lucky generally at the HCII and SCS so many teachers do care about this but @amyjko ’s talk today went beyond excellence in also addressing how disability Justice is perhaps not possible without economic Justice. Following up on my boosts from yesterday: I don't, generally, have a problem with people wanting to actively monitor their health. But the problem with this trend is that people are pulling from a finite supply of continuous glucose monitors (CGM) with luxury and privilege for something they don't NEED, and there are tons of people with diabetes, in the US and around the world, who do not have access to a CGM. EVERYONE WHO USES INSULIN SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO A CGM. Your blood glucose hitting 120, or even 180, isn't a problem, because you will immediately see it come down. When it shoots past 180, rockets into outer space and just says "HIGH" - then you can have a CGM. @ivan when insulin costs $10 a bottle but sells for $300, o reserve the right to call that corporate greed. When they decide to lower the price to $35 (because they totally can) but then call this lowering a “market growth opportunity” that’s greed. It’s also capitalism. This person paid only $15 for a refill of insulin, instead of the full $2788,10. For a live-saving drug, these prices are insane. I cannot imagine how it must've been to pay around a month's salary for a single refill of insulin...
