"Intelligent design" might be "creationism in a cheap suit" but the concept of design in biology is interesting and legit.

I agree with @ddennett (Dan Dennett) that design is real and that weasel words like "designoid" or "apparent design" are counterproductive and meaningless.

But then can we have design without a designer?

Intelligent design is the assertion that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection."

Academic freedom is the belief that the freedom of inquiry by students and faculty members is essential to the mission of the academy.

Intelligent design proponents like to make a lot of noise about academic repression and denial of academic freedom. Beyond the whining are very few specific examples, and usually upon closer scrutiny even these examples seem duplicitous.

Ultimately, intelligent design is just a #newspeak rebranding of #creationism; though it uses scientific jargon, it is not science because it violates the principle of methodological naturalism, is not falsifiable, and does not use scientific methodology.

I am responding to news of the introduction of Senate Bill 619, which includes this section:
"(c) Teachers in public schools, including public charter schools, that include any one or more of grades kindergarten through 12, may teach intelligent design as a theory of how the universe and/or humanity came to exist."

The banana argument is a specific teleological argument (argument from design) for #theism based on the form and function of natural objects — specifically in this case the #banana. According to Ray Comfort, the banana is "the atheist's nightmare", as he considers its ease of use, nutritional value, and "colour-coding" to be irrefutable proof of intelligent design. In its usual presentation, it is humorously foolish, so much so that Comfort has since taken to using it as a joke himself (and claiming that it always had been a joke or "stand up routine"), in contrast with the quite serious tactic he originally intended it as.

Intelligent design #creationism is a #pseudoscience that maintains that certain aspects of the physical world, and more specifically life, superficially look designed, and hence WERE designed, by an intelligent being (usually, but not always, the #God of the #Christian religion). Although the concept is pre-scientific, it only really came into common circulation after the 1980s.

Supporters of intelligent design (termed "design proponents", less respectfully, IDiots) usually claim that the idea is not based on Christian creationism, although the existence of the Wedge Document is a pretty big hint that there is a link, and a now-infamous epic editing fail in an early draft of the ID textbook Of Pandas and People also accidentally revealed the God man behind the curtain.

@introvertnudist many things do seem to require some kind of observer to settle into reality, so I think on a basic level (certainly if you're going to be living in a human brain) perception had enormous power. And consensus perception does big things (not always or maybe even often great for the human condition).

I will say, I like to annoy my #futurist #transhumanist friends by pointing out that #simulationtheory and #intelligentdesign aren't functionally different. lol
