I'm going to make #freebsd my main development environment for a year. I will deeply explore the environment. But everything is a personal environment (unfortunately, I can't use my personal laptop where I work or choose the OS). I can't complain, I have a powerful thinkpad with #rhel.

I'll try to use either #vim or #intellij Idea (both for #java and for #golang and rust). Vim for #java is infeasible...or not?

@Today was all about books! 📚 Got my copies signed by @trisha_gee for her awesome trio: Head First Java, 97 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know, and Getting 2 Know IntelliJ IDEA. 😄 I may have brought a few too many, Trisha even thought I was swiping her display copies! 😂 No blame there. Not sure who's at fault but it still works in #JavaScript. So I'll keep it as is...

It's been a while since I ran #OpenBSD on the desktop, and I forgot that IDEs in packages include:

#Netbeans
Codeblocks
#Intellij
#GNOME Builder

And, of course, #Geany, #Vim, #Emacs, Gedit and whatever #KDE editors I'm forgetting about.

I don't know how well all of these "full" IDEs actually run.

And what did I miss?

Like it or not, #AI is now fully entrenched in #software development. But whereas #ChatGPT is currently being used in silly ways, #IntelliJ's AI Assistant shows a more sensible approach.

This morning I’ve been writing a boot loader in #Transputer assembler, using #Helix. Going well so far - laptop fans have not kicked in once. Helix doesn’t understand MASM syntax, that’s OK. Oscillating between “Hey I remembered how to do <some vim action that’s baked into muscle memory>!” and u / :q

It’ll be a while before I’m flowing - but I feel something must change. #IntelliJ isn’t energy efficient: I can no longer put up with it taxing my laptop hard, when editing a simple asm file.

User sind ja tendenziell eher kritisch, wenn ihre Anwendung plötzlich ein neues #UI bekommt. Mir fallen da gerade #MicrosoftOffice Produkte oder die jüngsten #IntelliJ-Änderungen ein.

I wanted to reconnect with #Java, try #Intellij and do something I though possible in the hours I had today, and I did!

It's crusty, with only two rooms and you can't take items let alone use them, but it works.

After an initial period of forgetting to type variables I was quite quickly back in the zone, after 7+ years on zero Java.

So #intellij introduce their AI Assistant 🤖 on their last Intellij Ultimate EAP release, I've been using it for a week or so for my #kotlin #gradle #springboot projects and it's pretty great!
