“Meta’s ‘Dangerous Organizations and Individuals,’ or #DOI, policy is based around a secret #blacklist
of thousands of people and groups, spanning everything from #terrorists and drug #cartels to rebel armies and musical acts. For years, the policy prohibited the more than one billion people using Facebook and Instagram from engaging in ‘praise, support or representation’ of anyone on the list.

‘Changing the DOI policy is a step in the right direction, one that digital rights defenders and civil society globally have been requesting for a long time,’ Mona Shtaya, nonresident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, told The Intercept.

Observers like Shtaya have long objected to how the DOI policy has tended to disproportionately censor political discourse in places like #Palestine — where discussing a Meta-banned organization like #Hamas is unavoidable — in contrast to how Meta rapidly adjusted its rules to allow praise of the #Ukrainian #Azov #Battalion despite its neo-#Nazi sympathies.”

While the #US uses the Orwellian lie that “no American lives have been lost so we haven’t been waging war on much of the rest of the world for the past two decades”, reality is that the ‘exceptionalist’ imperium that is the United States has, in fact, been engaged in ‘permanent war’ during this time.

In his latest book, “War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine,” Solomon lays bare the role of government and media in concealing the consequences of war & the utter mendacity & hypocrisy that underpins the blatant criminality of the US imperial war machine!

He breaks down how American politicians, alongside mainstream media, spin lies and hide the true cost of their wars.

Particularly persuasive are the Solomon’s illustrations of how media outlets have been coopted into producing what is essentially war propaganda and how journalists who seek to question the honesty of government officials are routinely silenced.

Solomon makes a striking comparison between the American media’s strong interest in the losses endured by Ukrainian civilians after the recent #Russian invasion of #Ukraine and its indifference to the fate of arguably millions of #Iraqi civilians after America’s invasion in 2003.

Among a series of great quotes featured in the podcast is the famous letter that writer & theologian Thomas Merton wrote to a friend of his as the #Vietnam War was gearing up in the 1960s.

Merton states, “The world is full of great criminals with enormous power, and they are in a death struggle with each other. It’s a huge gang battle of supremely well-armed and well-organized gangsters, using well-meaning lawyers and policemen and clergymen as their front, controlling papers, means of communication, and enrolling everybody in their armies. Let us avoid false optimism and approved gestures, and seek truth.”
