In der westlichen Kultur transportieren wir damit hauptsächlich Humor oder Nähe, je nach Kontext auch sexuelle Absichten. In Nigeria hingegen signalisieren Eltern ihren Kindern mit einem #Zwinkern diskret, dass sie den Raum verlassen sollen, z.B. weil es ein Gespräch unter Erwachsenen ist. In #China gilt es sogar als unhöflich, jemanden anzuzwinkern, und in muslimischen Ländern wird es gegenüber #Frauen als beleidigende und respektlose Geste interpretiert.

Auch der digitale Zwinker-Smiley ist bei vielen nicht sonderlich beliebt, da er als herablassend interpretiert werden kann. Mit der Verwendung in Chats sollten Sie daher ebenso vorsichtig sein.
