One of the reasons why people feel so much #alienation from #science is that no relevant connections are offered for their lives.
We need to think beyond #industry, #government, and #engineering when we think about #practical #applications of scientific #research. #Philosophy, #politics, and #art are relevant applications as well, and often more personal to people who feel alienated from science as we know it.
Nuclear physics feels more relevant when you're talking about Geiger counters being used to assess accident sites than when you're talking about them being used at bomb testing sites, even though the physics is essentially the same. Biochemistry feels more relevant when you're talking about water testing to monitor aquatic ecosystems for toxins than when you're talking about quality control for PepsiCo, even if you're talking about pH testing in both cases. Astronomy feels more relevant when you're talking about beautiful, profound JWST images that taught you something that amazed you about the universe we live in, than when it's a simple list of "fun facts" about galaxies. Chemistry feels more relevant when you get to try an experiment yourself in different ways, than when you're watching someone else do it formulaically.
Because one directly impacts people's lives for the better in meaningful ways, and the other causes harm, exists only for profit, or is totally abstract. One involves the #active #participation and #engagement of the learner with their own #curiosity, and the other is being lectured to by someone who thinks they know what's "really" important.
If you want to #interest more people in #learning and science, ask them #questions. Emphasize the #process of science, don't treat it as a set of established #facts. Engage with #issues of #representation and #ethics in your field, as well as #interdisciplinary work. And find ways to make your work felt positively in people's lives. Change what a #scientist is, and what science is for.

Homeware chain Wilko is the latest high-street name facing ruin, as rising costs and interest rates squeeze retailers. A swathe of ‘zombie’ companies are set to be sent to their graves. We must make the bosses and bankers pay for this crisis.

Better question: everyone - politicians, economists, bankers, real estate agents, the general Canadian public - knew in 2022 that #interest rates were going to rise significantly. In fact, they'd already started going up.
So why did they take out a variable-rate #mortgage? Sure, it chopped a few dollars off their payments as long as rates stayed low, but not a huge amount, and doing so exposed to them to the large #risk of rising #rates.
How is this not poor #planning?

“Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election and growing political polarization in the US contributed to an ‘erosion of governance’ that led a top credit ratings agency to downgrade US debt, a senior director of the company said on Wednesday.
“Fitch cut its rating on US debt on Tuesday. It was only the second time in history that a leading credit agency has downgraded US debt.”

The banking giant #HSBC says its #profits have more than #doubled as it benefited from rising #interest #rates around the world. Europe's largest bank reported profits before tax of almost $22 billion - up nearly13 billion dollars on the same time a year earlier. The lender also saw its profits further boosted from its purchase of the UK arm of the now-defunct Silicon Valley Bank, which it bought in March for just over a dollar.
